Firm History
OJM's unique multi-disciplinary consulting model is a result of the firm's genesis. A brief history of the firm may help illustrate OJM's commitment to providing integrated, comprehensive planning to its clients. Prior to their merger that led to the creation of OJM in 2007, Jason O'Dell, Christopher Jarvis, and David Mandell had each established themselves as nationally-known experts in their fields. Jason O'Dell is the author of the book Financial Planning for Physicians: Strategies for Saving Money and Securing your Financial Future and has delivered lectures at universities and conferences nationally. Further, he had been recognized by Medical Economics as one of the nation's leading financial planning firms. Since 1992, his firm had built a client base of over 800 physicians, business owners, wealthy families and professional athletes in more than 30 states and 3 foreign countries.
Shortly after meeting at UCLA's Anderson Graduate School of Business in 1995, Christopher Jarvis and David Mandell formed Jarvis & Mandell, LLC. They have become two of the country's leading experts in the fields of wealth planning and protection, appearing on Bloomberg Television, dozens of radio programs, and hundreds of local and national conferences. In addition, they have authored the books Wealth Protection: Build Preserve Your Financial Fortress, Wealth Protection, MD, The Doctor's Wealth Protection Guide, and Risk Management for the Practicing Physician. Their latest book, Wealth Secrets of the Affluent, published by John Wiley & Sons, is in bookstores now.
Firm Philosophy
OJM provides independent and fee-based, collaborative multi-disciplinary wealth planning.
To better understand what this is, let us examine each of these elements separately to see what it means to OJM clients:
1. Independence
OJM is not affiliated with any mutual fund, investment or insurance company. OJM can access nearly every major investment vehicle, open fund, or insurance product for clients. In this way, OJM works for the client and is not influenced by any vendor. OJM's independence makes it easier for the firm to analyze a client situation and provide unbiased recommendations of products and solutions that are in the best interest of the clients.
2. Fee Based
OJM's tremendous experience and expertise drives the planning model. OJM's clients are looking for analysis and recommendations that are unbiased. As a result, OJM offers clients consulting engagements for a flat fee. By avoiding hourly billing, OJM and its clients have the same goal - efficient and effective analysis of the situation, presentation of opportunities and ultimate implementation of a solution. The shorter the time period to solve client problems, the less it costs clients in time and money.
3. Multi-Disciplinary
The combination of OJM's expertise and multi-disciplinary approach set the firm apart from other advisory firms. OJM relies on the experience of an attorney, two CPAs (one in-active), three MBAs, and various securities and insurance professionals. By considering various strategies and applications from a variety of disciplines, OJM tries to avoid planning overlaps (which can be costly) and planning holes (which can be devastating to a family or a business). The goal is a less expensive endeavor that more adequately addresses the wide range of concerns a client may have.
4. Collaborative
Every client has a unique combination of concerns, risks and goals. OJM realizes that a truly comprehensive plan requires the collaboration of a number of other specialists. Most clients will require the assistance of an accountant, an attorney familiar with state-specific concerns, and possibly a national expert in a specific area of taxation or benefits planning. OJM can work with a client's existing advisors or help the client find new advisors if the client has outgrown the existing ones. For more on this please click here.
5. Wealth Planning
From OJM's experience working with over 1,000 clients, it has learned what processes are most efficient. To reduce total cost to the clients and to most effectively address the client's issues, OJM has developed a proprietary planning process. By taking clients through its unique planning process, OJM assures its client that there is a systematic way to cover all important issues. After analyzing all areas of its engagement, OJM offers analysis and works with its clients to design the best possible implementation plan. If clients want to continue working with OJM, the firm will gladly assist clients in every phase of the implementation.
